THE GREATEST INVENTION
(a 1-page story)
PAGE 1/panel 1 -- we meet EDDO THOMASI, an old Italian man (about 70) in a two thousand dollar suit. However, he is not a businessman and has a very eccentric style, a bit of Salvador Dali, to him. He is surrounded by office colleagues, most younger, who are all congratulating him, both happy and a little sad. For today is the day he retires.
Colleagues (1) -- Congratulations!
Colleagues (2) -- I can’t believe you’re retiring!
Colleagues (3) -- You’re the world’s greatest inventor! You can’t just stop!
EDDO -- no, not stop. I will make one more invention...the ultimate invention for civilized man!
PAGE 1/panel 2 -- EDDO down in his lab. It’s a mess. He has lots of machines with tanks and tubes and rotating churners. There are beakers and cups all around, knocked over or smashed. He is in “creating” mode and should have a mad scientist feel.
EDDO -- No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No!
PAGE 1/panel 3 -- A group of people upstairs, listening at the door to the basement. His wife, KALA, stands on the right side with a wife’s patience. The others look shocked or upset.
Listener 1 -- What could he be working on?
Listener 2 -- “The ultimate invention for civilized man”?
Listener 3 -- Better than the personal aerolift?
Listener 2 -- Better than the Autobuild house creator?
EDDO (from downstairs): Eureka! I’ve done it!
PAGE 1/panel 4 -- Downstairs, now clean and spotless. People are gathered on the right side (including KALA). In the middle, his machine -- elegant design of gears and tubes and bottles and shakers. On the right side, EDDO holds up a martini glass (full) in salute/celebration.
Onlookers -- Is it finished? What does it do?
EDDO -- Friends and family, I present to you the ultimate invention for civilized man...a machine to make the perfect martini!
PAGE 1/panel 5 -- (small final panel) KALA slaps her forehead comedically. EDDO takes a sip of his perfect martini.
EDDO: Mmmm, delicious.
